Perhaps you’re wondering, “is it really possible for moms to make money in their spare time, while being around their kids all day long?” YES, it is! For work at home moms, affiliate marketing is actually the perfect means to earn money from home. Sadly, many stay-at-home moms just don’t know how to utilize this opportunity, or they aren’t even aware of its existence. The interesting (and dare I say it, BEST) part about affiliate marketing for moms is that you don’t need to be a computer programmer or marketing expert to start.
So, what exactly do you need to know about affiliate marketing?
WHAT IS AFFILIATE MARKETING?
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing which involves earning commissions by promoting the products of other persons or companies – basically, promoting a product that is not your own, for a commission.
It’s a fantastic way to create passive income streams, and although it requires a bit of work up-front, once in place, it requires relatively little maintenance (which is one of the things I love most about it!)
HOW DOES AFFILIATE MARKETING WORK?
The industry is structured with four major players:
- The brand or merchant: (also referred to as the retailer) owns the products which is to be sold
- The network: the platform that gives product offers to the affiliate (also responsible for overseeing payment)
- The affiliate: the promoter of the product (that’s you!)
- The customer: the person who purchases the product
As an affiliate, you promote the products to your audience by sharing an affiliate link, which is unique to you. You then receive a reward from the company for every customer who clicks on your unique link and goes on to make a purchase.
CAN YOU REALLY MAKE MONEY WITH AFFILIATE MARKETING?
Affiliate marketing is a totally legitimate way of making money, and it’s the perfect way to build passive income. With passive income, you put in the work to build something upfront. And then, the money that comes in feels totally passive because you’re receiving payments days, weeks, months, even years after you put in all that work. All of the sudden, you’re earning money while you sleep!
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. CREATE A WEBSITE

2. CHOOSE YOUR NICHE (AKA YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION)
Deciding on a niche is an important step – having a clear purpose will help you attract the right audience, and determine which products you want to promote as an affiliate.
To do this, first identify your market. Start by writing down a few potential markets you’d like to work with. For example, health and fitness, small business owners, bloggers, travel, finance, weddings, tech gadgets… the list is endless! What do you like? What are your interests? What are you passionate about?
Once you’ve decided on a market, you can use this to determine your niche. So for example, maybe you’ve chosen small business owners as your market – there are literally HEAPS of niches within this market. Here are just a couple ideas:
- those who need help with social media marketing
- those who need help with copywriting
- those who need help with facebook ads
- those who need help with email marketing
- those who need help mastering Pinterest
The thing is, you don’t want to please everyone in the the small business owner space. (It may be super tempting when you’re starting out, but I guarantee you will struggle later on.) It’s actually better to niche down to something quite specific, so that you can then focus on creating amazing, targeted and valuable content for your audience.
3. FIND AFFILIATE PROGRAMS TO JOIN
The next step is to find and apply for affiliate programs that compliment your niche. You can find products/services to promote through affiliate networks, or individual affiliate programs.
Affiliate networks are websites that aggregate individual affiliate programs so that they are all in one place. For example, Amazon, CJ Affiliate, or ShareASale are all affiliate networks. And sometimes companies have their own affiliate programs that are not a part of any network – you can usually find these by scrolling to the bottom of their homepage and looking for the word “Affiliates”.

When you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to focus on just a few affiliate programs to begin with, so that you can really optimize your efforts before moving on to the next. Eventually, you can begin adding more affiliate programs to diversify your income streams – even small streams can really start to add up!
4. CREATE VALUABLE CONTENT
There are two specific types of content that work extremely well for converting readers into buyers. These types of content are written with readers in mind – their purpose is to inform above all else, and allow you to connect with them by providing a personal experience with the company.
Product Reviews: a great way to introduce readers to your affiliate product while also giving them your honest thoughts and opinions on it.
Tutorials: show your readers how a product can benefit them by writing a “how-to” guide.
WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AFFILIATE MARKETING IF YOU’RE A STAY-AT-HOME MOM
Affiliate marketing for moms is easier to accomplish than doing other jobs which can easily be interrupted. There is no time frame to work, it’s highly flexible and there’s no pressure. It’s the quickest way to monetize your site or blog, and it can be done in stolen moments – while your kids are napping, or at school, or whenever you find yourself with some free time.
