I’m sure we all agree: being a mom isn’t easy! We have our homes to manage and we also have the kids to take care of. And in the midst of all this, we’re also hustling to build a dream. When it comes being a work-at-home mom, the challenge we usually face is that of time management. Here are my top seven time management tips for work-at-home moms that will help you manage your time better and make every day more productive:
TIP #1: START YOUR DAY EARLIER
I know plenty of #bossmoms that get up before their kids, starting their day at 5am to get an hour or two of work in. I love this idea, but my kids are super early risers, and even if I’m in #stealthmom mode, they inevitably hear me and decide it’s time to start their day, too.
So if this suggestion doesn’t work for you, try working in the morning even if your kids are up. Give them something fun like coloring, play-doh or kinetic sand, that will keep them engaged for the 20-30 minutes you need to write.
(Do those easy tasks – like pinning or promoting – in the evening, because they are mindless. Most of us are tired after we finally get the kids down, and have no desire or ability to do work that requires actual focus.)
TIP #2: PLAN YOUR DAY / WEEK
It’s common knowledge that if you have a good schedule and keep to it, you’ll be able to manage your time. You need to outline everything you have to do: your work, your kids and maintaining your home. Include every task and schedule them. This will give you a blueprint of what you should be doing and when you should be doing it.
Remember to keep this schedule flexible because you never know what’s going to happen in the daily life of a work-at-home mom!

TIP #3: NAP-TIME IS YOUR FRIEND!
If your kids are still small, they’ll probably have a nap-time. Yes, we’ve all heard the advice that we should “sleep when the baby’s sleeping”, and use that time to rest or even catch up on a TV show. But if you’re hustling to build a business, then your child’s nap-time gives you an opportunity to work. Use the peace and quiet to focus on crossing off some of those tasks on your blog/biz to-do list before they wake up.
TIP #4: ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS
Time management means you accomplish all you have to do as fast as possible. If you want to use your time well, you have to reduce distractions to the barest minimum. Find a comfortable, quiet place in your home to work, get rid of your phone (ie. turn off notifications) to avoid distractions from social media, and avoid mixing TV and work . It’s proven that multi-tasking is actually less productive than ‘single-tasking’.
TIP #5: SNACK PREP
Take the time once a week to create some simple, easy snacks to have on hand for those times when you’re all set to start writing, pin-creating, or social media-ing and a child inevitably begins screaming that they’re hungry. Again.
- Pre-cut fruit bags
- Animal crackers
- String cheese
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Applesauce pouches
- Vegetable crudites
- Popcorn bags
TIP #6: ASK FOR HELP
Some days, you just won’t able to do it alone. When you run into tight situations, you should ask for help. If you’re working to a deadline, and your kids are there seeking your attention, you could ask your spouse to help watch the kids while you finish up with your work. Unfortunately, trying to be a super-mom and do #allthethings yourself will only lead to you not meeting your targets (and perhaps having a breakdown!)
TIP #7: USE BEDTIME TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
I’m ‘that’ mom that sits with my kids until they fall asleep! #dontjudgeme During this time, I always have my phone in my hand doing something biz related!
The point is you need to be creative with your time. Use bedtime to get some easier blogging/biz tasks accomplished like promoting on Pinterest, listening to a podcast or training, reading about blogging, jotting down post ideas in my notes app, or participating in Facebook group promo threads.
AND DON’T FORGET TO PLAN ‘KID TIME’!
Remember why you’re doing this. Most likely it is so that you can actually be around your kids more, right? So in the midst of work and all of that, you have to plan time for your kids. Plan your work from home job in such a way that it allows you to spend quality time with your children. Take the time to tuck them in, to play with them and to help them with their assignments… and immerse yourself in spending time with them when you are in that time block. It will lessen the #momguilt for those times when you need to get some work done.
Time management is very important in life; if you don’t plan your time well, you’ll end up accomplishing very little. However, keep in mind that even if you plan, things will come up and that is okay. Do what you can do, when you can do it and don’t be too hard or critical of yourself.
